No, this is not a Police bashing article. It's a government bashing one. The Government of the island of Malta appear to have some disdain for their Police force, specially those riding motorcycles. They have not issued radios with earpieces; instead the officers when chasing a bad guy in a car, need to speak in a handheld radio! So here they are riding in a high-speed chase (though the island is a tad small, the chase can't be that long), one hand holding onto their motorcycle handlebar, the other to the radio. © Jason Borg | Problem is, the law states that you are not allowed to use a hand held device when driving. In other words, they are breaking the law. The same law they are supposed to enforce. To make matters worse, the motorcycle cops don't have any special protective gear, apart from helmet, gloves and boots. The helmets aren't full face helmets, the gloves and boots are made out of a poor quality, and they have no protective jackets or trousers. Already there have been some nasty accidents which could have been prevented with the use of proper gear. So these officers need to patrol the streets wearing inferior equipment, while being only able to ride with one hand. It really looks like the authorities in Malta have no respect for their motorcycle Police. Isn't there a law somewhere that says an employer should protect its employees with proper safety gear?
