While some traditional manufacturers are looking towards electric motorcycles, KTM springs to mind, others are looking at different ways of being more ecological. The Argentinian motorcycle manufacturer Zanella Open link in a new window (they produce motorcycles, scooters and quads) have released a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) motorcycle. CNG vehicles are considered less polluting than their gasoline counterparts (Source: link Open link in a new window)

March of this year, Zanella will start selling a 150cc motorcycle powered by CNG. The factory converted Rx150 Open link in a new window bike carries two gas tanks, giving a range of about 200 kilometers. Additionally, you have a 3.5 liter gasoline fuel reserve tank, just in case you can't find gas.

The advantage of running on gas instead of traditional gasoline, is that your running cost are reduced dramatically. The price of gas in Argentina is 6 times less than "normal" fuel, and the lifespan of the engine increases. Cars have been run successfully on compressed gas for a while now, and it works. Running the CNG option will cost you about US$285 on top of the normal purchase price of the Rx150, but that cost can be recovered quite quickly, depending on how much you ride.

So maybe we'll be seeing a new fashion arrive for our motorcycles. or maybe we'll see motorcycles that run on gasoline, gas, hydrogen and electricity - all at once - true hybrids.

May we live in interesting times.....
