Many believe that loud pipes on your motorcycle will save your life, because, as reasoning goes, car drivers will hear you coming. There are many debates, whether this is true. Scientifically it's a stretch since the pipes are aimed to the rear, and therefore the sound, but I myself have had occasions when I had a loud pipe, revving it up in dense traffic caused the drivers in front to pay attention. So whether they do or do not save lives, many "civilians" don't like them. They wake people up, they are a hinder in normally quite neighborhoods, and generally are a pest. One person living in Edmonton, Canada had enough of a loud motorcycle waking up his daughter early in the morning, and decided to do something about it. The person, Mark Nesdoly, is an electrical engineer by trade, so he designed a "Noise Snare". The Noise Snare is a piece of equipment that can be placed anywhere, like in a parked car. The device records sound levels, and when a sound level exceeds a predetermined level, a video camera goes into action and records the vehicle, including the sound (in stereo). Other information is also records; time, date, location and the sound level. The system is automated. Either a human being can view the footage, or the system can, and apparently it can automatically determine which vehicle made the noise, and send a ticket. The Street Noise Reduction System can identify which car or motorcycle made the noise in multi-lane roads. As this moment Calgary is testing the system, and may start using it shortly, with other cities to follow. It's not a new idea (see related articles below), but more and more people are starting to get into arms against noise levels. I know one person who will adopt the system in a New York minute, current French president Nicolas Sarkozy. Anything to repress the motorcycle world. Check out the video below. You'll see the Noise Snare system in operation. At least they only show one motorcycle creating noise, the rest are cars. Click here to access the Noise Snare web site .
