We all know that tires that have lost their profile have become dangerous especially when riding in the wet. We also all know that tires don't last forever, in fact their life spans are pretty short considering the life span of our motorcycles.

Michelin Open link in a new window have launched a new type of tire that will change this. Launched at the Detroit Auto Show, the new tire, named Premier A/S, is currently only available for cars, but for sure it will arrive for motorcycles. 32 tire sizes are available already, and the tires will have a 60,000 mile warrantee.

So what's so special about these tires? Simply put, when your current tire wears down, the grooves that are used to evacuate water (thereby preventing you from aquaplaning) over time wear down. The rubber from your tires are slowly removed, bit-by-bit. So the grooves used to exfiltrate the water are reduced, and therefore less water can be moved away from the tires. Until there is no more groove, i.e. your tire is totally bald - slick as they say in racing terms - and therefore will no longer evacuate water under the tires. And that is when you start spinning on the road.

The new Michelin Premier A/S tires when they start wearing down will WIDEN the grooves. So even though the profile is getting smaller, the groove will continue to evacuate the same amount of water since now the grooves are wider instead of taller, but the same amount of water can pass through.

They have also made some 150 grooves that are hidden inside the rubber compound. When the rubber wears off, the grooves start appearing, giving you the grip you need in wet conditions, even if the tires are old.

The Michelin Premier A/S tire will currently only be sold in North America, and currently only for cars, at US$156 per tire. But for that price you get additional safety for at least 60,000 miles. And you can count on this tire becoming available around the world, and for motorcycles. You can take that to the bank.
