Though statistically motorways/autoroutes are safer for motorcycles than normal roads, sometimes accidents happen that are strange, and unfortunately, lethal. In France on an autoroute, just before the toll booth, a motorcycle stopped behind a big truck waiting in the queue to pay the (exorbitant) toll. Obviously the truck driver did not see the motorcycle, nor was he patient, since he saw that another toll booth had less vehicles, so he reversed in order to join the other queue. You can sense what happened.... the truck reversed over the motorcycle. The toll booth staff intervened immediately, but too late. The biker died on the spot. © Ph.B/La Provence | It's a very sad affair on its own, but what makes it worse, is that apparently the truck belonged to the MotoGP Tech3 team from Herve Poncharal. The driver has been arrested and detained for involuntary manslaughter. It's obviously a rare occurrence, but motorcycle riders in France have been fighting for motorcycle-only toll booths for years. Slowly, some companies operating the autoroutes have been adding them, but there are only a few of them in the country. If there had been a motorcycle-only toll both, this would never have happened. Motorcycles, if there is no motorcycle-only toll booth, need to take the manual toll booths, since the automatic/credit card ones can not be used by bikes. The manual ones is where you'll find all the trucks...
