Recalls are always a hot topic in the motorcycle world, since often our lives depends on them {link}. But did you known that motorcycle recalls are second in number only to toys!!! Last year 197 motorcycle recalls were issued in Europe on (417 for toys). In the motorcycle recall category, the mini-moto features the highest, and 2nd in the number of recalls are off-road motorcycles. The reason these two categories receive the highest recalls is because they are not meant to ride on the road, and therefore do not have to comply with strict regulations. Hence you often find badly designed motorcycles, with lots of faulty parts. To make matters worse, these motorcycles are often meant for kids to ride.... Since the production standards of these motorcycles is in uncharted territories, and the politicians have not yet decided to embrace them, ACEMThe European Motorcycle Manufacturers Industry group (French abbreviation for Association des Constructeurs Européens de Motocycles ) have established a standard for the manufacturing of these motorcycles. Click here to access the ACEM website for the construction and safety standards for off-road motorcycles . The European Commission has a website with all recent non-food and medical product recalls, including motorcycle products. The site is called the Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Products (RAPEX ), and will show you all recent recalls, mandatory or voluntary, within the European Union. You can search for your own motorcycle brand, or you can enter any keyword. The site is still expanding. Data has been stored since 2005, and more and more is being entered. I'm glad to see such a system in place, but mad that not many people know about it. If you read the article link in the first paragraph above, you'll know why... Click here to access the RAPEX site
