My first thought when I read the article, was about Big Brother watching! But then emotion was pushed away by logic. In that tiny country of The Netherlands (the country that gave your legal joint smoking, legal self-killing, legal gay marriages), the politicians are planning to introduce a law that makes it mandatory to register your motorcycle's (and car) kilometers. This could be done when your vehicle goes in to the garage for maintenance, checks, etc. Your current mileage is registered in a central databank. The law could come in effect between next year and 2010. Then, when the motorcycle gets sold, the potential new owner can verify in any post office that the bike has truly been riding those kilometers, or if the odometer has been jimmied, in other words, fraud. Apparently, it costs the Dutch €250 million because of falsified kilometer counters every year. So, in the end, my reasoning is that it's probably a good thing when you go and buy a pre-owned motorcycle. This way you're sure that they haven't played with the mileage ( like "Harley Davidson 1973 - only 120 miles. Driven by old lady to Church every Sunday").
