Air-bag vests are quickly becoming more and more popular. With the safety proven during the many crashes you can see in MotoGP races, it is obvious that built-in air-bag systems can save lives, or at the very least, prevent serious injuries.
French company AllShot have been a distributor of the Hit-Air air-bag vest system since the beginning, but now they have decided that the market has become big enough for them to make their own product. They have just launched the AIRV1 air-bag vest.
The AIRV1 is a pull-over-your-normal-jacket vest, and it is tied to your motorcycle or scooter.
Remember there are two different types of air-bag vests, ones that are tied by a piece of string (okay, that is a bit simplified, but you get the idea), and the other uses electronics attached to your motorcycle to determine whether you have left your motorcycle voluntarily. The latter are far more expensive since they involve adding electronics to your motorcycle.
So when you go for your ride, you hop onto your motorcycle or scooter, clip the wire from the AIRV1 vest to your bike, and off you go. In case of you leaving your motorcycle unplanned, the wire gets pulled, and 18 liters (4.7 US Gallons) of CO2 gets pumped into your vest within 140 ms (that milliseconds, i.e. so fast you can't even see it). This complies with the new safety norms for air-bag vests (link ), and it has already been certified. If you are worried about walking away from your bike without unhooking, do not be worried. You need to pull the wire with quite some force, so you will not inadvertently pull the wire.
The AIRV1 comes in 3 colors, black, black with reflective parts or yellow, and there is a second model called the AIRV2 that uses clips to close the vest (the AIRV1 uses zippers).
The air-bags themselves protect your front, back and neck. The parts of the vest that have the air-bag are protected with Cordura material, which is abrasion proof. For the parts of the vest that are not exposed to abrasion, the AIRV1 uses a light mesh material, offering a good ventilation. The whole vest weighs 950 grams (2 pounds) and comes with its own pouch, attach wires and CO2 cartridges.
The AIRV1 is one of the rare air-bag vests to have its own exterior pockets, something we applaud. Imagine you put on an extra vest over your existing jacket, but you can not get to your jacket's pockets without unzipping your vest. Problem solved with the AIRV1.
