German IMC motorcom Open link in a new window have had their IMC Camos BHS 500 and 600 on the market for a while, and have now updated their product. The new models are called IMC Camos BTS 200 and BTS 300.

Both BTS 200 and 300 now offer Bluetooth version 2.0 (A2DP Open link in a new window), which includes high quality stereo and longer battery life (typically 14 hours operational time and 180 hours standby time).

The BTS 200 allows you to connect to your Bluetooth equipped stereo device; Bluetooth GPS (like a Garmin or TomTom), Bluetooth mobile phone, Bluetooth bike-to-bike walkie-talkie (like PMR Open link in a new window) and intercom.

The unit is equipped with a priority interrupt, so for example, your music is turned off when your GPS "talks". The same principle is applied for your mobile phone or intercom.

IMC Camos BTS 300

The BTS 300 is the same as above, but offers a range of up to 500 meters (compared to 10 with the BTS 200). This allows you to talk to another motorcycle rider while both riding. The 500 meters is a maximum, and can only be achieved under certain conditions, but you should be able to get at least 100-150 meters range under normal real day-to-day circumstances.

Both units use 6 mm deep stereo speakers, so they're nice and slim. It shouldn't be difficult to fit in your helmet. The unit itself is waterproof, so no worries when riding in the rain.

In contrast with other Bluetooth communicators for motorcycles, the BTS 200 and 300 both come equipped with a large MUTE button. None of the other units tested have a mute, and it makes sense. There's an automatic mute when the other devicescommunicate with you, but when you are riding in dense traffic, and need to concentrate, you can either fumble to turn off your iPod (unlikely with gloves anyway), or just press the mute. Sounds logical!!

Both packages contain soft wired microphone (for full face helmets) and boom microphone.

Available in the USA!

For a change, motorcycle riders in the USA can actually buy these units. Benchmarkhelmets.com Open link in a new window represent IMC Camos in the USA, so get yours there.

The BTS 200 costs $230 while the BTS 300 will set you back $279.95.

No Bluetooth Device?

If you want to use one of these communicators but don't have a Bluetooth device, no worries? IMC/Benchmarkhelmets have adaptors that allow you to plug in a device (for example an iPod) and receive the sounds via the Bluetooth adaptor.

Look Ma, no wires!
