Several GPSs out there do not have the capability, or very limited to plan a complex itinerary for you to ride on your motorcycle. Garmin probably has the best one with its MapSource application. XTream Wearther (you know, the folks with wearable GPSs {link}) have released GPS Moto Planifacteur . The multilingual stand-alone application is very much like TYRE {link}, except that it works with TomTom AND Garmin GPSs. The basis is that you use their application, which in turn uses good old Google Maps. Inside the application they have embedded Google Maps, and you use Maps to find your destination or waypoints, and build an itinerary. You can let Google do the heavy work, linking your starting point to your ending point, and then move the route around to suite your specific needs. You can switch to satellite view, so that you can see what kind of terrain you'll be riding your motorcycle on, and you can use the Google search function to find rest stops, gas stations, camping etc. Once you're happy with your results, you can download the itinerary to your TomTom Rider (or one of the compatible GPSs) or Garmin Zumo (or compatible). Apart from the ease of use, there's one enormous advantage that springs to mind: Map Updates !!! If you already own a GPS, you'll know that you'll need to spring for map updates every year or two, since the GPS maps are outdated quite rapidly. However, Google Maps is updated all the time, and it's free. When you download an itinerary, it might contain route information that your GPS map doesn't have, but at least if you keep following the preprogrammed route, you'll get to your destination. Unlike TYRE, the software is not free, but it's cheap. It'll set you back €29.00. The software is in English, French and German. Click here for more information (at this moment their site is in French only, but it looks like they're putting other languages).
