The Okada , a motorcycle taxi, in Lagos, Nigeria is a necessary evil. Having lived in Lagos myself, you know that to get through the incredible traffic jams, your only means of transportation is the okada, even when they ride over sidewalks, one-way streets, ignoring red lights, at least if you survive the trip, you know you'll get there more or less on time. But the mortality figures are incredibly high, so it looks like the local authorities are going to ban the motorcycle taxis from riding in their city (and thereby increasing their already traffic ensnared and polluted cities). © AFP/Pius Utomi Ekpei |

Beginning on September 1, entire swathes of the city will be out of bounds for motorcycles, and that has raised questions about how anyone will get anywhere even nearly on time due to the maddening traffic. Authorities say they will be stopped from driving up the wrong way, and the roads they will be authorised to travel on will be sharply reduced (AFP/Pius Utomi Ekpei) |
