Daylight Running Light
The French have been talking about it, in Scandinavian countries it's mandatory, the European Commission wants it, and now the Dutch are going to make it mandatory. The hot subject is DRLDaytime Running Lights - having your car lights on during the day., the stupid idea that a government can save lives by forcing cars to drive around during daylight with their lights on.

Yes, no doubt, car drivers will have less accidents when their lights are on during the daytime, since you can see them better. In the Dutch case, the government believes it can save 35 lives per year.

But.... how many motorcycle lives are sacrificed to save those 35 car drivers? Since our only defense is visibility, it would mean we become invisible. Our lights were the only thing that a car driver could see when we arrive behind them; No light, or better, too many lights, and the driver will never notice us.

Years ago, European governments told motorcycle riders that in order to be safe, we needed to put on our lights during daytime. Now it would seem, they don't really want us to be safe.... double standards....

In Austria, the government has stopped mandatory DRL, since the results have not been noticeable for cars. Also, ecology groups have warned that running lights will increase CO2, since the car uses more electricity.

The protests in France against DRL has been massive, and the French government has dropped it for the time being. But it will come up again, as it will in other countries. It's time that the European Motorcycle Lobby group started paying attention. Hey ACEM Open link in a new window, where are you????
