For motorcycle purists, ignore this article. But for those who like having information while riding your motorcycle, this recently submitted patent may be of interest. Selle Italia , an Italian bicycle saddle maker, has filed a patent last year for a multi-functional mirror, not only for bicycles, but also for motorcycles and cars. The idea is to present critical info to the rider on the mirror. This idea serves two purposes; 1) provide information on an already limited surface since motorcycles do not have much space, and 2) it makes the rider look more frequently in the mirror, hopefully reducing the number of accidents caused by cars hitting you from behind. (Click on the image to see the details) The information that can be provided is multi-fold. Data like outside temperature, inclination angles, and it can even have an embedded GPS, giving you directions. Apart from the shiny part which we're used to with mirrors, this mirror will have a transparent area with a back-illuminated LED/LCD and plasma display, plus a few icon buttons (though that might be more difficult to operate while riding a motorcycle). Of course, the idea is not new. There are several mirror-with-information providers (check this one ). Click here to read the multifunctional mirror patent . Your imagination could run wild here with the information the mirror could provide; Police car warning if one approaches you from behind (specially if it has a radar active), heart rate monitor (in case you have a bad ticker), etc... just let me know what info you'd like to see... Here's what I have envisaged: (Click on the image to see the details)
