Cops are human beings, just like you and me. But they are paid to up hold the law, and they must therefore set an example, which is not always the case. Last week, a LA off-duty officer had spent the evening at a Police Academy bar drinking and singing. Drunk as a skunk, with an alcohol level well over the legal limit, he climbed on his motorcycle and 3 miles further crashed his motorcycle. The 47 year old Doan died in the crash. This is obviously unacceptable, he should have known better. But what really bothers me, is that he was at a Police Academy bar! Meaning there were many other Police officers around who should have prevented him from riding away. Here in France, the bar owner can get arrested for allowing this to happen. In the mean while, the Police department has ordered the bar employes to be retrained on alcohol laws. A bit like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped. Cops have got wide powers to stop anyone who has been drinking, and they do so frequently, but how can you uphold the law if you don't obey it yourself. That like a doctor saying you should stop smoking, while lighting up a cigarette. It just doesn't work like that.....
