The very popular, and useful (to say the least), British government website, SHARP ( Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme ) has undergone plastic surgery. Sharp, for those of you who haven't visited this site yet, is an independent testing organization of motorcycle helmets, and they've redesigned their site to be even better. At the new site, you can obviously search for a specific motorcycle helmet manufacturer & model, or you can search for helmets that have been tested and rated in the past by type of helmet. Once you arrive at a specific helmet, you are presented with this info (click on the screen snap to enlarge). You'll see static information such as manufacturer, type of helmet, weight, price (in English pounds), specials items for the helmet (like removable visors, ventilation, etc). Apart from a photo of the helmet, you'll find the important information, an overall safety rating, expressed in 1 to 5 stars, and multiple diagrams of a head and the impact zones & their protection. Using color coding, you can see where the helmet was the most effective in providing protection. Very nice... Another new and handy feature for prospective helmet buyers, is the compare feature. You can compare up to three different helmets, by clicking on the "+ADD" button. You'll see the three helmets side-by-side, with all the salient data. The comparison can then be exported to an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. A total of 202 motorcycle helmets have been tested so far, with more coming. It's a wealth of information for bikers worldwide, not only for those in the UK. If you have a look at some of the "big names" in the helmet industry, you'll be surprised that they don't do so well, despite enormous price tags, while smaller, and cheaper helmets do well. Good job... Click here to access the new Sharp web site .
