The folks at the UK Department of Transport SHARP {link} (Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme) have built up quite an extensive database of motorcycle helmets. They test helmets, and then rate them according to their safety. Helmets are rated from 1 to 5, with one being the equivalent of an egg shell. SHARP have now started testing flip-up helmets. These kind of helmets have long been a source of discussion on most motorcycle forums. Many people say that they are less safe then full face helmets. Well, here are the scientific facts as per SHARP. They studied the chinguards and locking mechanism of these type of helmets. The first 20 have been entered in their extensive database: | Make | Model | Rating | | AGV | Longway | 4 | | Airoh | Matisse RS | 2 | | BMW | System 5 | 5 | | Caberg | Trip | 5 | | Justissimo GT | 4 | | Duchinni | D601 | 1 | | G-MAC | Concept | 3 | | Grex | RF2 | 4 | | KBC | FFR | 1 | | Lazer | Granville | 4 | | Revolution | 4 | | Nolan | N103 | 4 | | N102 | 4 | | ROOF | Boxer | 4 | | Schuberth | C2 | 4 | | Shark | Openline | 3 | | Evoline | 4 | | Shoei | Multitech | 3 | | Viper | RS V121 | 3 | | RS RS101 | 4 | For each helmet, a part from the standard functions and features, you'll see a graphic like this. This tells you how reliable the most vulnerable part of a flip-up helmet is. Compared with the Duchinni D601 which failed 30% of time... Very interesting site...the only I've found so far in the world. Congratulations SHARP! Click here to access the SHARP database
