For the people who have been following the famous Dakar Open link in a new window rally, you know that it costs a lot of money to participate. Even amateurs on motorcycle need to spend a fortune to race in one of world's toughest rallies. For an average motorcycle amateur, they can count on a budget of around €70,000. So not exactly chump change....

So many go begging for sponsors, or even family & friends to get the money to achieve their life long dream. But it looks like one competitor had a different idea how to get money, or maybe the competitor didn't know anything but his team did.

Dakar Assistance Truck Caught

Two Spanish men got arrested recently when they picked up their Dakar assistance truck in Le Havre, France. The truck, full of spare parts, tires and tools, had been shipped back with the rest of the assistance trucks from Chile. It arrived in Le Havre, and the local Customs & Excise inspectors found an interesting haul...

... 1.4 tons of cocaine hidden inside the spare tires inside the assistance truck!! The total street value of the coke was estimated at €270 Million. You can race many Dakar rallies for that kind of money, even win them. The 2 Spaniards were arrested. Two Bulgarians were also arrested and presumed to be the leaders of the smuggling ring.

At this time, there is no information available whose truck it was, even if it was a motorcycle, car or quad, and if the team knew anything about it, or if it was just the logistical people of the team involved.

It's not the first time the Dakar was caught up in a drug smuggling. The previous one was a fake Dakar truck (Source Open Source link in a new window)
So I'd guess that all Dakar vehicles will get more detailed inspections in the years to come.
