Most big cities nowadays have bicycle sharing programs, while the more daring cities have electric car sharing programs. They all rest on the same principle; you take the vehicle from a station and later on bring it back to a station (not necessarily the one you took it from).

But in Barcelona Click for map, Spain they came up with a much more elegant and easy solution, and it involves electric scooters. Called Motit Open Motit link in a new window, the program uses electric scooters developed by Going Green Open Going Green link in a new window, and manufactured in Barcelona. These funky little scooters/motorcycles have an eye-catching color, a top speed of 65 kph and a range of 40 to 60 kms, depending on road and driving style. They weigh 80 kgs.

In contrast with the bicycle sharing programs (and electric cars), you can't go up to a station and take one. That is because there are no stations! You need the free smartphone app, which will tell you where the closest available Motit scooter is. Because you don't bring it back to a station, but leave it where you are going.

It reminds me a bit of the 70's bicycle sharing program that was run in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The bicycles were painted white, and if you saw one, you just jumped on it and pedalled away. When you reached your destination, you just left the bicycle there for the next person.

The Motit is equipped with an onboard GPS, a LCD screen (used for instruments and navigation) and the electric scooter has a 3G mobile connection. The 3G mobile phone connection allows the Motit center to check where all their scoots are at any moment, and they can also tell which ones need recharging or servicing.

After you have downloaded the free smartphone app (iPhone and Android), the app will tell you where the closest Motit is, and you reserve one of them. You can also reserve a scooter in advance.

No need to bring a helmet, there's one on the bike. There are currently 50 of these units parked around Barcelona, and towards the end of the year, there should be some 300 available.

This sounds like a really nice way of getting around the city, both for inhabitants and visitors. No need to go searching for a station, just fire up your app and see where there is one. Hop on it to your destination, and leave it there. Cute. Handy. There are however service areas for the motorcycles spread around the city.

If you are a member, you obviously pay less, but even a tourist can use the service. Members pay €0.45 and €0.55 per kilometer or between €5 and €6 per hour (depending on the type of rate plan taken). Tourists will pay €7 per hour.

For those that plan to use it daily, there are even cheaper solutions.

So if you're a tourist planning to visit the magnificent city of Barcelona, it will only cost you €7 per hour to ride along the city. That is a lot cheaper than taking a taxi, probably even cheaper than hopping on buses. But it's definitely much more fun.
