In a recent publication "Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice" scientists analyzed traffic accidents before and after a state ordered a cell-phone ban. In states like California, where before the ban there were on average 66.7 accidents per day, after the ban, the scientists noticed only 65.2 accidents per day, a negligible decline in accidents.

So does that mean that it's safe to drive a car while talking on the mobile phone? This is where the specialists disagree. It could well mean that for California for example, the ban was for handheld phone usage, meaning if you use a hands-free kit, you could use the phone while driving. But still many car drivers continue to use their phone, even without hands-free kit, so that could be one of the reasons the number of accidents did not drop.

Texting and Talking Texas

Or could it mean that hands-free kits are as unsafe as handheld phone? Would a total ban on mobile phone usage solve that problem? Some scientists are claiming that is not the case, that using a phone is as distracting as looking at a GPS, listening to the radio or talking to fellow passengers. But then that study may have been sponsored by the telecom industry...

But whether they are dangerous or not, I know that when I am riding my motorcycle I can spot a car driver talking on the mobile phone a mile away. You just notice their erratic behavior.

Personally, I think they should strip out the radio, GPS and other distractions in a car, and bind & gag the passengers. This way the car driver can pay full attention to motorcycle riders.
