This is something I never thought was going to happen. In The Netherlands, they have systematically been lowering motorcycle and car speeds on the vast motorway network throughout the country, sometimes to a ridiculous level, like 80 kph on a 4 lane motorway. With more and more pressure coming from the green lobby groups to lower the speeds even further, the Dutch government has done a 180° flip. Starting in March 2011, several motorways will see their maximum authorized speed go from 120 kph (the maximum allowed) to 130 kph. It is not yet known which motorways, but there are going to be several. Some political parties want to see the maximum speed raised even further, but that is probably a nice wet dream. The speeds will be adaptive, i.e., the maximum speed will be posted electronically depending on traffic and road conditions. The government is stating that the reason they are raising the speed limit is to increase traffic flows. At last there's some common sense with some politicians. It's nice to tell you something good, for a change....
