Like many countries, The Netherlands is apparently planning to start a license point system. You get a specific number of points to start with, and every time you are naughty, they deduct points from your driving license. When you have no more points, you no longer have a valid license. The precious piece of paper is for both car and motorcycles; if you've lost one, you've automatically lost everything. In other words, if you've lost all points while riding your motorcycle, you can no longer drive a car (and if you have a truck license, that one is gone too). The Dutch government is going to propose that if you get caught twice (DUIDriving Under Influence. Drinking and driving., speeding, tailgating, etc) within a space of 5 years, you loose your license for 6 months. If you were really speeding (meaning a lot) then you could say good-bye to your license for up to a year and half. The loss of the license will not be performed by a judge, it'll be automatic. This means, that you can not defend yourself, and throw yourself to the mercy of the courts. You may think that it's reasonable, but experience has shown in France that it's not. Police are out in droves looking at making their quotas, and you can get caught for very small things. It's why for example here in France, 100,000's of people are now driving without a license, and therefore without insurance. So much so, that the government is looking at reducing the lost license time. So maybe in a few years, the Dutch government will realize it as well. A classical case of NIHSNot Invented Here Syndrome... What a world we live in...
