The Price Of Gas Around The World, And Its Effects

The table below shows you clearly the effect that gas prices have on not only riding your car or motorcycle, but also the development of electric vehicles.

The more expensive gas is, the quicker people will turn to alternative fuel, preferably 0 emissions. Electric cars & motorcycles development are only at the beginning stages of their product life, so the technology is still very expensive. On a mile-by-mile basis, electric vehicles are still more expensive than their gas-guzzling counterparts. Couple that with a perceived lower range (perceived, since statistics show that on average a person rides about 30 km per day on a motorcycle, though that does change on the weekend), battery charging times and expensive battery replacing cost, electric vehicles are currently only interesting if the fossil fuel cost is through the roof, or as a novelty factor.

Once you have acquired an electric vehicle, in most countries, specially in Europe, riding/driving it becomes very inexpensive.

Europe mostly has a high tax rate on gasoline, so fuel has become very expensive. The USA has one of the lowest gas prices in the world, but since it's one of the biggest car & motorcycle markers in the world, it's the one area that needs to have high gas prices in order to stimulate electric vehicle development.

So far, electric vehicles development has been limited to niche players, like Tesla Open link in a new window for cars, and Zero Open link in a new window and Quantya Open link in a new window for motorcycles. Until more and more mainstream manufacturers start developing electric vehicles seriously, it will remain a small niche market.

So, what do we want? High gas prices and more electric bikes, or lower gas prices and no electric bikes? What do you say?
