Theft: Cars Decrease, Motorcycles Increase

Over the last few years, car have been receiving better technology to fight theft. More electronic gadgets and better security deter thieves from stealing cars. Fewer and fewer cars get stolen, and it looks like these thieves are now looking towards motorcycles for their illegal gains.

I recently saw the theft statistics from The Netherlands (link Open link link in a new window). If you look at the graphic below, it says it all:

Car theft has been reducing (the figures in the graph represent percentage of stolen vehicles) over the last decade, while motorcycles has jumped up noticeably. Moped and other 50cc, which offer practically no theft protection, are through the roof.

So it boils down to the technology used to prevent theft. And it looks like motorcycles don't have much to offer. The standard anti-theft equipment, chains, u-locks, disc locks, etc are not sufficient. They can be broken in seconds. Have a look at the video below. The bike has three locks, and it takes the thief 3:50 minutes to ride off with the bike, and that includes tidying up his tools.

Electronic prevention is more helpful, but expensive and can usually be found in more upmarket motorcycles. Below are the top brands stolen in The Netherlands, the percentage shown is the percentage chance that your motorcycle or scooter gets stolen.

Piaggio - 5.7%
Gilera - 4.0%
Baotian (??) - 3.6%
Sym - 1.7%
KTM - 1.3%
Kymco - 1.3%
Peugeot - 1.0%
DIY Motorcycle/kits - 0.6%
Husqvarna - 0.6%
Aprilia - 0.6%
Suzuki - 0.4%
Yamaha - 0.3%
Ducati - 0.3%
Kawasaki - 0.2%
Harley-Davidson - 0.2%
BMW - 0.2%
Vespa - 0.2%
Honda - 0.2%
Triumph - 0.1%

The third one, Baotian, is a Chinese scooter manufacturer. As you can see, the more expensive brands are found below, in other words, are more secure. I guess it also has to do with the popularity of the brand in the resale market.

But anyway you look at the figures, it is obvious that cars are more difficult to steal than motorcycles, and that the manufacturers still have far to go to make it more difficult to steal our rides. But then ... anything to do is wiped out when thieves just pick up the bike and put it in a truck and transport it somewhere.
