It's often a hot debate on motorcycle discussion forums and clubs; how good you are in the curves. Leaning into a curve on your motorcycle requires not only skill, but also guts. One way of finding out how deep you go, is how many check strips remain on your tires. The more that are gone, the deeper you have gone into the curve (of course for the cheaters a bit of sandpaper will resolve that issue).

Motorcycle Tire Chicken Strips

Now tire manufacturer Metzeler Open link in a new window have gone out and changed all that. In their new Sportec M5 Interact Open link in a new window motorcycle tire, a tire designed for sportsbikes, they have a Lean Indicator. The indicator gives the rider a visual confirmation of the maximum level the tire has been used. The indicator will show the angle where the tire profile has been on the road; 25°, 30%, 35%, 40% and 45%.

Obviously this is meant for inspection when you're not riding, i.e., at a standstill. I don't think this will work when riding....How would this work in the MotoGP world? Will Rossi & Co not use up everything after the 45%?

Anyway, interesting feature. You can actually see on the tire how your curve performance was. There's more new technology for the tire, so clicky on the link below to read all about it...
