There's nothing more annoying when riding your motorcycle at a decent speed and encountering a Police speed trap just when you opened up your throttle a bit too much. You can of course use a radar detector, but it's illegal in many countries, and often useless with modern radars.

Trapster
But there are several tools you can use to ensure that you know when there's a Police speed trap ahead. One of these tools is called Trapster Open link in a new window.

Trapster is a tool that you can download on a smartphone, like iPhone, Blackberry, Android and any J2ME enabled phone. It also works on Garmin and TomTom GPSs. The best part of it, is that is FREE.

What Trapster does, is take user information and disseminate it to other users, so a community radar warning system. Let's say you have downloaded the iPhone tool, and you're riding around on your motorcycle. You see a speed trap. You press a button on your display, which sends the GPS coordinates to the Trapster server. That info is collected and analyzed.

Next time someone comes in the area, they get a visible and/or audible warning about the Police trap, giving you the time to throttle down. The way info is received will depend on your device. iPhone use PUSH technology, meaning it will receive the info no matter what. On a standard GPS, you'll need to download the info before you set off, and you'll not get real-time updates, but still, you've got a good picture where you can expect a speed trap.

On the Trapster web site is a worldmap (courtesy of Google) that shows you all the speed traps at this moment. Zoom in to any country, and keep zooming into the area you are looking for, and you'll see all the speeds traps. Nifty.

Trapster
If mobile speeds traps are often located at a specific area, Trapster will remember that location and warn you, even if no one has said that there's one there at that moment. Trapster will mention that this is an area that they know frequently has cops checking your speed. Better safe than sorry.

The Trapster database also has all the locations of fixed speed and red light radars. Handy....

There are some 1.6 million Trapster users worldwide, so the more that use it, the more accurate and up-to-date the info will be.

And remember, it's free! You don't pay for the software, nor for the service.
