Despite a loose threat by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to stop the use of bus lanes by motorcycles (he was aggravated after being stuck in a massive motorcycle protest - article ), Boris has agreed to continue the use of bus lanes by motorcycles. According to Boris "The chaos that was predicted by some doomsayers has clearly not materialized and, as I suspected would be the case, we have found substantial support for the measure. There is always scope for improvement and a new trial, with a strong focus on safety, will allow motorcyclists to show that they can adhere to the spirit of the trial and ride with respect. The impact of these new measures will help us decide whether motorcyclists can continue to use the bus lanes in future years. One of the ways we can smooth traffic flow is by encouraging more people to get on two wheels, and the prospect of using bus lanes to avoid traffic and having an easier journey should help with that aim.". The 18 month old experiment conducted in London has highlighted some interesting points, that other cities should take note of. The fear that motorcycles would collide with cyclists was totally unfounded. Traffic analysis has found that motorcycles using the bus lanes decreased their journey time by 10%, 36% faster than cars. In a survey conducted, 51% of cars and vans supported the concept of allowing motorcycles to use the bus lanes. Finally, a city that has understood that motorcycles are a solution to traffic problem. Bravo for London and Boris Johnson.
