Speed camera operators, specially the private ones, want to make sure you pay your speeding ticket, and never take in doubt the validity of the radar photo. Challenging the ticket means a loss of revenue for the operator. One way of stopping you from challenging them appears to be by copyrighting the photos. The case involves a motorcycle rider, Peter Barker, who got "caught" riding his motorcycle in East Sussex in the UK at 38 mph. He proved he was not speeding by measuring the distance he has gone in the two speed radar photos, and simply calculated the resulting speed, which was inferior to what was claimed by the speed camera operator. A further court case cleared Peter Barker from the speeding charges, since the judge agreed with his calculations. TheNewspaper.com web site posted the photos on their web site, and were indirectly told that the photos are copyrighted and not allowed to be published. It's obvious that the camera operator and Police do not want you to know that it's quite simple to calculate using two photos how fast you were really going. (Click here to read the original story ). Here are the two "copyrighted" photos: I can understand why operators don't want you to know this technique, and why they insist the photos are copyrighted. They stand to loose a lot of money otherwise. But one question arises... if the operators are insisting photos are copyrighted, then (at least here in France) you need the permission of the person being photographed to make a photo. So a catch-22! Good work Peter!
