Sometimes there's nothing better than to be a spectator in a fight. It's fun, entertaining, and you don't get hit. But in this fight, we are sadly the victims, and we're not even throwing any punches.

The reason the fight is being held? Statistics! The UK based Thames Valley Safer Road Partnership, the organization that runs many of the famous Gatso cameras (speed radars) in a part of the UK, is claiming that their speed cameras are saving lives. They are saying that they not only saved lives, but also reduced the number of accidents on their roads by 38%.

Wrong says Dave Finney, an engineer with a good mathematical mind. He analyzed the figures and came up with another conclusion: there have been an increase in the number of deadly accidents due mostly to the speed cameras. According to him, the 212 cameras increased deadly accidents by 38% and serious injuries rose by 16%.

Why the enormous difference? Well apart from the fact that the speed cameras generated UK£1.632.300 (US$2.743.300) in 2012, the Thames Valley folks are looking at their results in a skewed manner, making their statistics look favorable.Let's face it, it is much more acceptable to have speed cameras bothering us while riding our motorcycles if those cameras are lowering fatalities. Right?

Changing Statistics

But Dave has an assistant in the ring that could earn him the fight's crown: The UK Statistics Authority said that the Thames Valley Partnership's claim to saving lives is "inappropriate" (link Open link link in a new window). And wham... 1 - 0 for Dave. Can the Thames Valley Partnership get up from the floor?

So there we go (again). Proof that the cameras aren't there to save lives, just to make some people a lot of money.
