Many people think that smoking weed is bad, dangerous and should be outlawed. The state of Colorado, USA, one of a growing number of states, has legalized pot smoking for a while now. But people have been against it, and have been claiming that crime will rise, the number of road fatalities will increase dramatically and the earth will stop spinning.

Well... it's starting to look like they were wrong, seriously wrong. First of all, tax revenue has increased by quite a high factor (marijuana is taxed, just like booze), and secondly, crime has gone down. These are statistics coming from both Colorado and Washington.

But now it looks like the third "anti" argument is moot: Colorado is reporting that the number of fatal accidents is at its lowest in history (source Open source link in a new window). It is true that the number of accidents involving marijuana use has increased, even doubled in some cases, but the number of alcohol DUI in many cases has decreased. In the above source document, the author also states that the elements of marijuana linger in the body for weeks, so if you smoked a joint a few weeks ago and are tested for drugs today, you will come out positive. So statistics are a bit skewed here.

The conclusions are not concrete, but one undeniable fact is that there have been far less accidents. So they need to study it a bit more to understand why there are less road fatalities, and what effect marijuana has on it. But things are looking good for the joint trade. So riding motorcycle after smoking weed?? Not a good idea.

Maybe I should volunteer for some extensive tests...Joint Smoking Smiley
