Many, if not most, politicians have room temperature IQs. If not, they would have gotten themselves a real job that requires hard work, honesty, dedication, sacrifice and low pay. Well.. okay, when you put it that way, maybe they're not that dumb.
Anyway, Thomas F. Barraga , a Republican county legislator for West Islip, New York, in a sad letter received from a 17 year old kid, whose mother had been in an accident while riding her bicycle, responded to the letter that will have made Hitler a proud man. Barraga responded saying that bicycles and motorcycles should not be in his city.
I have lived in West Islip most of my life and my personal feeling is that no one who livesin our hamlet or for that matter in Suffolk County should ever ride a bicycle or a motorcycle. I cannot tell you how many constituents over the years have told me that they are taking up bicycling for pleasure and exercise. I have told them not to do so but they usually do not listen – 90 percent of those people eventually were hit by an automobile many like your mother with serious physical injuries.
All the kid wanted was some signs warning car drivers, or better yet, bicycle lanes. But not for "Mr." Barraga - his opinion is that bicycles and motorcycle shouldn't be in his city.
The world would be a far better place if there weren't any people like him running the planet. Below are the two letters:
