MIC (Motorcycle Industry Council) have started a website and database displaying motorcycle helmets that have received a DOT approval. Lagging way behind their UK counterpart, with their amazing SHARP site, the new MIC site is a start, but far from complete. Called HelmetCheck.org , it allows you only to find those helmets that have received a DOT approval, not if they're any good or really safe. The entry in the database is voluntarily, so it only represents those manufacturers who have supplied information to the database. In other words, there's very little information. Although I applaud any initiative that increase safety and the information on motorcycle safety, this is a far cry from what has been done elsewhere. The UK SHARP shows the tests performed on the helmets by the neutral organization, and include safety ratings, not just a listing of what is approved. Hopefully, more manufacturers will submit their models to the database, and maybe who knows, one day they'll start testing them, or maybe working together with SHARP. Click here to access the site
