Using A Motorcycle Rail Service In Europe

Though Europe is not as big as Asia or North America, when you go on a holiday, specially on your motorcycle, you do need to ride long distances. For those of you who enjoy the ride, not the destination, it's no biggie. But for those of you riding with your partner, trying to get to your holiday destination, so that you can enjoy riding there, it's a different kettle of fish.

Most railroads offer motorcycle transport, often in the wee hours of the day, or late at night, and often you don't get to ride with your motorcycle, in order words, you need to go there on another train {link}.

RailSavers Open link in a new window offer a comprehensive program for motorcycle riders who need to cross France quickly and comfortably so they can enjoy their holidays.

From the city of ‘s- Hertogenbosch (aka Den Bosch), The Netherlands Click for map, they have special trains that will bring you to popular destinations in France and Italy (Avignon Click for map, Frejus Click for map in France, Alessandria Click for map and Livorno Click for map in Italy).

Den Bosch is easily accessible from the UK, The Netherlands, Germany and North France.

Using Pullman trains, you can choose couchettes or sleeping berths to spend the night.

You also can eat on board, with a full waiter service offering a full three course meal. After the meal, you can enjoy drinks with your fellow bikers in the dining-room-converted-to-club-room car.

Afterwards, you arrive at your destination, fresh and ready for your holiday adventure.

RailSavers even offer special rates for those of you living across the channel (ie the UK). They allow you use one of the ferries at a cheaper rate.

You'll need to consult their time tables, since the motorcycle rail service only runs on particular dates (holiday times - June to September).

It's not a bad way of going on holiday. Maybe next year, I'll do the same, go to Florence by train and then from there on by motorcycle (instead of going by train to Nice and from there on by bike like I did 2 years ago). Or if you're visiting Ducati or any of the other motorcycle manufacturers in the area.

For example, taking your motorcycle to Tuscany (Livorno), will cost you £172 on the 3rd of July, and £303 for a three bed sleeping berth. So if you're travelling with your spouse, the trip will set you back £475 (€515 / US$775 - plus the meal and drinks). It's not cheap, but you get there fresh, and save on time, petrol and tire wear.
