Here's a video of the very first Dakar rally. It's amazing to watch, specially when you see the difference between then and now.
Motorcycles that were totally not adapted to the roads, or should I say lack of roads. Racing boots? Forget it, just some good and sold walking boots. Same for the suits, helmets, etc.
These were the days when the amateurs could, and did, win a race, and when racing budgets didn't exceed 4 digits. Watch how Cyril Neveu, winner of the 1st Dakar motorcycle, gets on the podium....
