I've made it no secret that I am a great admirer and fan of electric motorcycles (and cars if I could afford one). But in many gatherings with friends, colleagues and even strangers who stop me to question my electric BMW C EvolutionBMW C Evolution Review scooter, I always hear the same thing: electric vehicles pollute because they use electricity that comes of the grid, and to make that electricity, the power stations pollute!

So what people are saying is that electric vehicles pollute more or less as much as standard ICEInternal Combustion Engine. An engine in which the combustion of a fuel (normally a fossil fuel) occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. vehicles. WRONG!

First of all, here in France, some 70% of electricity is generated by nuclear power stations. But that is not the main point. In fact, if you look at the very well done video below, you will be explained that there's more electricity used to generate petrol (and other derivative products) than what you need to ride your electric motorcycle. Of course, this is one point of view, and the figures quoted are difficult to verify.

Oil Uses Electricity

Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of the well known Tesla Open link in a new window electric supercar stated "We'd have plenty of electricity for electric cars if we just stopped refining oil".

But don't take his or my word for it. Have a look at the video below. It's mind boggling. Remember, the figures can be slanted, or correct, but it's the concept that's important.

And the conversation is even more moot when you realize that I will be putting in a solar powered charging station for my electric scooter.
