Cardo systems, the makers of the Scala-Rider motorcycle helmet Bluetooth communication device, have filed a patent (# US 2009/0264073 A1 ) earlier this year, that will replace the normal helmet clamp for a Bluetooth communicator, with a special helmet neckpad. The neckpad will contain all the electronics and buttons, and in theory should be fitted to your motorcycle helmet. The neckpad communicator will have all the bits & bobs you require to make you able to communicate, like microphone and loudspeakers. There are many advantages of having the unit installed in the neckpad, foremost being that it'll not sit, like it does now, on the outside of your helmet, catching wind and rain. On top of that, it just plain looks fugly. But there's one thing that puzzles me (okay, if I'm only puzzled by one thing, I should be a happy man). Will this work for all helmets? I think not! Each helmet manufacturer has its own system for the neckpad. Just the position can differ from model to model. I've tried to read the legalese on the patent, but nowhere does it describe multiple types. So does this mean that they'll offer different neckpads for different helmet models, or is this intended for one specific helmet model (like the current working relationship between Cardo and Schuberth). IMHO if you look at the drawing, I'd say it's a Schuberth helmet neckpad. Time will tell. I guess we'll find out next year. Click here to read the patent .
