Even before the Dakar Open link in a new window rally has started, BMW Open link in a new window is in trouble.

While the trucks, cars and motorcycles are being loaded onto the boat today and tomorrow in Le Havre, France, David Fretigne Open link in a new window, the star rider for BMW (he recently switched from Yamaha to BMW to help the German brand make it to the top again in the Dakar), has been declared unfit to race.

According to Dakar race director Etienne Lavigne, David Fretigne will not be racing in the 2011 Dakar.

Fretigne crashed very heavily in last month's OiLybia Rallye Maroc Open link in a new window (read related articles below), breaking some vertebrae and ribs in the process and has not been able to get healed quickly enough to take part in the race.

Now BMW's hopes for the race are with Dutchman Frans Verhoeven Open link in a new window.
